    NEW BERN --- Are you looking for something really special to do this Fourth of July?
    Pack a picnic, load the kids in the car and head for Tryon Palace in historic downtown New Bern. American history is brought to life when children and adults listen to a dramatic the reading of the Declaration of Independence. You will feel the drama in the air during the reading with the shouts and cheers from the crowd. After all, we’re celebrating the birth of our nation and isn’t that reason to cheer? more

  • NEW BERN LITERARY FESTIVAL AND BOOK FAIR
    Free – July 11
    Tryon Palace Visitor Center Auditorium

    (NEW BERN, NC) --- African-American authors and poets are returning to Tryon Palace for the 4th annual New Bern Literary Read-In and Book Festival on Saturday, July 11 from 12 noon until 5 pm. Come learn about the historical legacy of African American writers in North Carolina. Meet historians and present day authors, hear their stories and purchase their works in this recitation, reception and book fair. Guest speakers include Dr. Reginald Watson. Other authors include: Lemuel Abdullah (poetry), Michelle Larks (Christian fiction), Suzette Perkins (contemporary fiction), Jarold Imes (youth fiction), Marina the Poet, and Nichole Rouse (Christian fiction). This event is co-sponsored by Shelia Peele-Miller, author.

  • “The Marines of Montford Point: Fighting for Freedom”

    NEW BERN, NC --- In 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt issued an executive order that the United States Marine Corps needed to begin recruiting and enlisting African Americans. The first black recruits received basic training at Camp Montford Point at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC. The US Marine Corps was the last all white branch of the U.S. military. More than 20,000 men were trained at Montford Point; most of them went on to serve in the Pacific Theatre in World War II.
  • TRYON PALACE FIFE & DRUM CORPS PERFORM AT “DRUMMER’S CALL”  IN COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG
    NEW BERN, NC --- The Tryon Palace Fife & Drum Corps traveled to Colonial Williamsburg May 15‐17 to participate in "Drummer's Call," a gathering of fife and drum groups from across the country. This was Tryon Palace's second year participating in this exciting weekend, and the New Bern corps joined groups from Virginia, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Connecticut. Drummer's Call is a unique way to showcase regimental field music, and the Tryon Palace Corps was thrilled to represent North Carolina at the annual event. more



  • "English Rose Gardening, Southern Style"

    This lecture is sponsored by The Harold H. Bate Foundation.

    NEW BERN, NC --- Here in the south we love our roses but know they can be finicky at times. This talk provides the opportunity to learn some rose growing tricks from an expert. Cyndi Lauderdale is the Extension Agent in Wilson County responsible for commercial, ornamental and home horticulture. She trains extension master gardener volunteers and assists commercial growers and landscapers.

Frank will show 5 different kinds of deer and drought-resistant gardens you can plant here in eastern NC. more
  • “Our Rightful Heritage: Tryon Palace and Its Preservation Dreamers”
    David L. Brook, J.D., Ed.D. May 31, 2009 – 2 p.m.
    NEW BERN, NC --- As a follow-up to the opening of the new Tryon Palace exhibit, ‘Hats off to the Dreamers,’ David Brook, J.D., Ed.D., a public historian who has written on the early leadership of North Carolina’s preservation movement, will speak on Sunday, May 31 in the Tryon Palace visitor center auditorium at 2 p.m.

    Dr. Brook will discuss the dynamic link between the state’s preservation pioneers and the reconstruction of Tryon Palace. He is the Director of the Division of Historical Resources in the Office of Archives and History, NC Department of Cultural Resources. Admittance is $4, which includes a special tour of the exhibit galleries inside the Palace following the lecture.

  • “THE ORIGINS OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT IN WORLD WAR II”

    When most Americans think of the Civil Rights Movement, we have in mind a span of time beginning with the 1954 Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which outlawed segregated education, or the Montgomery Bus Boycott. more
  • “Discovering American History in England” with Catherine Leitch
    NEW BERN, NC (3/31/09) ---Tryon Palace Historic Sites & Gardens and The English-Speaking Union are pleased to announce that on Thursday, April 30, Catherine Leitch will present a talk based on her recent book, “Discovering American History in England, an Illustrated Traveler’s Guide.” There is no charge for this lecture, which will take place in the Tryon Palace auditorium at 7 p.m. more

  • First Sunday Afternoons are FREE in the Tryon Palace Gardens!
    NEW BERN, NC (4/01/09) --- Spend Sunday afternoons FREE in the Tryon Palace Gardens!
    Beginning on Sunday, April 5 the Gardens at Tryon Palace will be open to the public at no charge on the first Sunday afternoon of each month through October. more

    NEW BERN --- Tryon Palace Historic Sites & Gardens is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the restoration of the Palace by welcoming visitors to come tour the Palace, three historic houses and the New Bern Academy free of charge on Saturday, February 7.  Games and activities for children are also free throughout the day. This annual community appreciation event is made possible by the Harold H. Bate Foundation. more
  • “Storyteller Mother Spirit”
    The Life of Amelia Green as told by Antonia Parker
    Thursday, February 19 – 7 p.m.

    NEW BERN --- Although born into slavery, Amelia Green’s life story is an inspiration to everyone who learns of her courage, determination and love for her family.  Amelia Green was born into slavery in the mid-eighteenth century.  We do not have a record of when she obtained her freedom, but the Craven County’s estate and court records outline her tireless efforts and heartfelt pleas to obtain freedom for her children. We know she worked as a weaver and lived in New Bern where she eventually was able to purchase a home for her family on George Street, which stands today across the street from the John Wright Stanly house. more
